Foundation laments poor state of Ondo juvenile home, seeks improvement

The Dalacreamz Foundation has called on the Ondo State Government to do everything possible to improve the condition of the juvenile home in Akure, the state capital.

The foundation, which lamented the poor state of the home, said the facility was below standard.

The Coordinator, Dalacreamz Foundation, Mr Oluyemi Fasipe, stated this during a visit to the home by officials of the body to offer the inmates gifts at Christmas.

Fasipe said he observed that the juvenile home was congested as the number of inmates there was more than its normal capacity, adding that it was originally built to accommodate 24 inmates, but it was currently housing more than 60 children.

“We met the facility in a poor condition and this is expected to give cause for concern. The facility originally was built for about 24 inmates, but it currently accommodates more than 60 children,” he stated.

Fasipe also appealed to the government to renovate the dilapidated offices at the centre as well as erect more buildings there as this would make the decongestion of the already overstretched facility achievable.

I also observed with concern that there is need for a sickbay at the juvenile home, while the dilapidated offices need urgent renovation. The government also needs to enrol children from the home in schools as only three out of the inmates are currently in school

Some of the items donated by the foundation were blankets, mosquito nets, foodstuffs, notebooks, clothes and toiletries, among others.
